by on August 17, 2010

A unique opportunity to attend an event that combines the

work of artist Manfred Zylla and poet Seni Seneviratne.

at Erdmann Contemporary Gallery

63, Shortmarket Street, Cape Town

Wednesday 25th August

6pm – 7.30

Seni Seneviratne will perform Rumours of War,

a poetry and song sequence,

in dialogue with

Manfred Zylla’s solo exhibition, Again and Again.

Again and Again comprises a selection of new large-scale drawings in mixed media. They tell of the plight of the world, point

to Manfred’s strong concern with the destiny of humanity, the future of the planet, and reflect his belief in art as a tool for change.

Rumours of War, echoes some of the themes of the exhibition as Seni plots a timeline that begins in 1915

and loops through the 20th century with poetry and songs that will open your heart to the reality of war.

Manfred will conduct a walkabout at 6pm before Seni’s live performance at 6.30

Manfred Zylla lives and works in Cape Town and Germany. Resident in South Africa since 1970, he became prominent as an artist highly critical of apartheid. He works in a wide range of media including painting, drawing and woodcuts. He sees himself as a social commentator and uses his art as a tool to demonstrate and illustrate shortcomings and inequalities within his society, be that Germany or South Africa.

Seni Seneviratne lives and works in Cape Town and UK. The hallmark of her poetry is her strength of vision and her quest to find the lyric voice in the face of trauma, to speak the unspeakable. She has the ability to write politically engaged poems without being polemical, to find authentic voices for those go unheard. She has an abiding commitment to political poetry and its power to create change.
